Position Summary:

1. Review orders for completeness and verify medical necessity documentation to determine if an ABN should be signed. Issue Notice of Non-Compliant Laboratory Test Request when needed.

2. Apply credit or charge to a patient bill (or order a patient bill to be credited or have charges applied) as appropriate.

3. Report problems related to coding or billing, potential fraud, waste or abuse of laboratory testing resources to the Laboratory Manager and/or to the NMC Corporate Compliance Officer.

4. Register laboratory patients in Hospital Information System when business office registration is not available with 95% accuracy.

5. Order entry to the laboratory computer system, to include medical necessity verification, entry of collection time, for hospital, nursing home and out-patients with 95% accuracy.

6. Phlebotomy of hospital, nursing home and outpatients. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required to safely obtain blood samples from all age groups (neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric). Four or less documented incidents of excessive hematoma per year. Re-collection incidence less than 10%.

7. Perform EKG's, and perform related record keeping functions. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required in the performance of EKG's on patients of all age groups (neonate,pediatric, adolescent and geriatric). All EKG's with excessive interference are repeated.

8. Process and chart summary reports. Reports are consistently placed on the correct medical record and charts are appropriately thinned.

9. Perform courier duties in obtaining or delivering test samples collected at area physician offices or other facilities.

10. Maintain reference laboratory logs and process reports (clinical and state laboratories).

11. Perform additional laboratory support duties:

     a. Receive incoming telephone calls when lab secretary is not available.

     b. Clean phlebotomy area counter-top (daily) with 90% compliance.

     c. Stock phlebotomy trays at end of shift and as needed with 90% compliance. d. Defrost and     clean refrigerators (as needed).

12. Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements


1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Training in phlebotomy or willingness to be trained on the job. Certification as phlebotomist is desirable.

Physical Requirements of the Job

The Laboratory Assistant should be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of phlebotomy, EKG testing, and charting requires a large amount of walking. Services requested on a STAT basis, require quick movement and efficient task performance. Extensive data input in computer system and fine printing on labels and requisitions requires visual acuity.
