POSITION SUMMARY: The Phlebotomy Technician/ Laboratory Assistant is a service orientated team-player with primary patient contact that functions as a phlebotomist utilizing universal precautions. The duties of this position include specimen collection and processing order entry to the laboratory computer, and medical necessity verification. This individual will also perform waived CLIA test once training and validation are completed.

This position reports to an appropriate Manager, Director or Executive. Position is hourly.

Clinical Practice/Position Duties

1. Phlebotomy draws in the respective clinic following policies and procedures.
2. Order entry in the laboratory information system, to include medical necessity verification, entry of collection and or received time for clinic.
3. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required to safely obtain blood samples from all age groups.
4. Must demonstrate knowledge and competency for all CLIA waived tests performed in clinic.
5. Label collected specimens at location of collection
6. Perform additional laboratory support duties:
      Clean Phlebotomy work area and drawing counter-tops.
      Stock phlebotomy strays at end of shift and as needed.
7. Use infection control precautions and safety measures as performing tasks.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements


Knowledge and skills:
1. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff, nursing staff and physicians.
2. Training in phlebotomy or willingness to be trained on the job.
3. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.

Education and experience:
1. Demonstrated Clinic work experience of at least 1 year is desirable.
2. Healthcare related experience is required, including working directly with the public.
3. High school diploma or equivalent required
